I was looking at apartments with my daughter, who was getting ready to move out on her own.
I was really worried that she would be cheated and not get a good deal.
I wanted to be able to go over the lease and look at any other charges they may throw at her, other than the rent. The one recurring expense that I kept seeing, was for the replacement of the thermostat if it is broken. There was also an article that ready they were responsible for their air conditioning. I thought this meant that she was responsible for the added cost of the air conditioning since it was more expensive and not as necessary as heating. I was doing a walk-around in the apartment, and I noticed that there wasn’t a thermostat in the apartment. This meant that all of the apartments got their heating from one central thermostat. The thermostat was probably regulated by the superintendent of the building. I knew how my daughter was with her not liking it to be too hot in the house. If this was someone who liked it warmer than most, she was going to be sick. I walked out of the bedroom and I started to tell her that this apartment was not a good fit for her when I heard her talking to the super. She politely told him thank you for showing her the apartment, but because of the lack of air conditioning and there not being any control over her own heat she would have to decline the apartment. I was never as proud of her as I was at that moment.
